Since we specialise in Armco barriers, it is no surprise that we often get questions about them. One of the most common ones we receive is whether it is possible to bolt them to tarmac. We thought it would be in everyone’s best interest to provide our opinions on the matter.
It isn’t strong enough
Our recommendation would usually be a solid no. Tarmac may have an aesthetic advantage over concrete. However, it is not ideal when bolting into the ground due to its weak attributes. Because of this, it can tear up and you can damage it with ease. Not to mention, once the temperature rises, it becomes even weaker.
You will want guarantees that your barriers will be as sturdy as possible. This way, they can endure numerous heavy impacts. Solid grounding is therefore essential, especially for high speed impacts. So, you should avoid bolting your barriers to tarmac surfaces.
Concrete all the way
Our suggestion when installing Armco motorway barriers would be to bolt them into concrete. If you have no option but to use tarmac, dig into the ground. Fill up the hole with concrete afterwards. At the top, be sure to leave a gap of a couple of inches. Once it is all set, cover over this with tarmac. It is also possible to set your bolts into the concrete when it is damp. You will end up with a sturdy fixing as well as solidity underground.
