Our company is a specialist supplier of safety products for roads, car parks, warehouses and many other settings. Our range includes motorway barriers in addition to several other designs. We want to ensure that we meet everyone’s requirements. The thing is that each client has their own unique needs. To combat this, we opt to supply bespoke barrier options in addition to standard ones.
The hard shoulder of a motorway is not exactly the safest place to spend time. Figures released by the highway agency reveal that our motorways saw 403 collisions between 2011 and 2016. Some of them were on the hard shoulders.
It is natural to expect drivers to know how to act when they are on the shoulders. However, many may not know what to do. This is even more likely to be the case for newly qualified individuals. To help, we have put together a few dos and don’ts when you are on the shoulder.
Stopping
For one thing, you will need to be careful with how you stop. Once you are on the hard shoulder, pull the vehicle as far to the left as you can. If there are motorway barriers, ensure you are not going to collide with them. The moment you come to a halt, turn the steering wheel to its left. This way, should your car get hit from behind, the position of the wheels shall ensure the car hits the crash barrier. It therefore won’t spear back onto the road.
Staying in the car
Secondly, you should not remain in your car. According to stats from the highway agency, around 70% of collisions on the hard shoulder were with stationary vehicles. If you sit in the car, there is a chance you could get seriously hurt. It is better to safely exit the vehicle and stand on the other side of the motorway barrier. Here, if someone runs into your car there is less of a chance of you being hit by flying debris.
